All participants who register online by August 15, 2024, will have their loved ones' names featured on the race shirt and other memorial materials. Please double-check the spelling of names during registration. Memorial items may include a "WE REMEMBER THEM" sign honoring your loved one, displayed along the course. To keep costs down, we will recycle these signs each year, so please do not take them after the event. However, you are welcome to take photos.
Learn More About The Amelia Center
All proceeds from the Annual Baby Steps Memorial Run support The Amelia Center in Birmingham, Alabama. Since its founding in 1997, The Amelia Center's compassionate staff have provided hope, smiles, and understanding to countless individuals who thought their lives were over. They offer individual grief counseling to parents, grandparents, and children dealing with the loss of a loved one, as well as family and group therapy. The center also provides educational opportunities for professionals such as teachers, clergy, and first responders who work with those experiencing grief. Services are offered free of charge, with support coming from Children’s, client donations, and community contributions.
Inspired by the overwhelming support after the first Baby Steps Memorial Run in 2009, the founders decided to make it an annual event. With your help, we have raised nearly $300,000 for The Amelia Center. Each year, our goal is to grow the 5k and fun run, providing a space for families to come together and honor those they have lost. Our average event hosts around 500 participants and volunteers, including families who have experienced significant losses, as well as friends and community members who support them and The Amelia Center.
Is this race only for families who have lost an infant? Absolutely not! We welcome anyone who has endured a significant loss. While the name "Baby Steps" reflects the founders' personal losses, we embrace all types of grief. Baby Steps symbolizes the journey we all take through mourning. No matter where you are on your grief journey, we hope you will join us and find comfort as you remember your loved one.
